Spotlight
Water & Period Poverty?
Had the pleasure of attending the annual Samburu Project gala in Santa Monica, CA. Not only was it a wonderful event, they conveyed their mission expertly.
The organization: In drought stricken regions like Samburu Kenya, access to clean water impacts every aspect of life from community health to education, women’s rights, economic opportunity, and agriculture. The Samburu Project builds wells to give communities this basic element of life.
During the event, The Samburu Project team not only raised enough to fund multiple new wells, but they also honored a fellow hero in arms, Madhvi Dalal, for her work with PadMad.
PadMad and the shocking reality of Period Poverty
PadMad’s mission is to supply young girls and the women of Kenya with reusable feminine pads. I was not have been prepared for how serious this issue was.
Madhvi spoke about the issue of Period Poverty. Women have periods. In order to go to school in Kenya a child must have two things, a uniform and shoes. Let’s say they get these things, great. Then, the next challenge appears, what do young girls with no items do when their period occurs.
Without feminine care products, the girls are left to use leaves, cow dung, or they simply will not go to school. Missing five days a month can add up to months of unattended school. 20% of girls in Kenya drop of school altogether. This can eliminate access to any opportunities within a region where opportunities are already limited.
One-in-ten girls go through some kind of transactional sex in order to receive feminine products purchased for them so they can simply go to school.
That is the brutal reality many of these girls are going through. Access to school equals access to opportunity.
Madhvi believes no girl should be impoverished simply because they have a period. She has been giving out reusable pads to change this.
Sometimes it is the smallest thing that make the largest impact.
Please check out PadMad as well as the Sauburu Project.

Can Ghosts Donate to Charity?

Yes, if they have a Will
More and more nonprofits are asking their donors to add them to their wills.
In fact, nonprofits should promote revocable living trusts over wills for legacy giving. Many donors don’t know this is an option and often times, if there is no family to inherit, any personal effect or money will simply go to the state.
To the donors: If you’ve ever wondered how you can sustain your legacy of good—even after you’re gone—writing a nonprofit into your will is a great way to continue to give back through your estate. But what about other forms of giving, such as living trusts and bequest giving?
